Yiwen Hu’s creative practice explores abstraction and ambiguity within change, focusing on the narrative relationship between emotion and nature.

She draws inspiration from organic forms found in the natural world—such as textures, stains, landscapes, the passage of time, and psychological states. These elements are expressed on the canvas through abstract, improvised gestures, reflecting the presence of emotions within the physical environment.

Yiwen works with raw canvases, water, and mixed media, employing techniques of staining (ink wash/blending) and layering. The creation of her works is shaped by both environmental conditions and her personal state of mind: weather determines the drying speed and bleeding effects of pigments, while intuition guides the structure and rhythm of the composition. In her work, the stains (or blending) symbolize the diffusion of emotions and the uncontrollability of nature, capturing fleeting psychological fluctuations and imbuing the pieces with spontaneity and openness.

Her use of color is also guided by her emotional state during the creative process.
